$1 out of ever $3 in household assets is held in retirement savings, reports the Investment Company Institute.
Some of these numbers are staggering, but they are worth documenting:
- $3.4 trillion is held in IRAs, and $3.4 trillion is held in defined contribution pension plans
- Retirement assets didn't fall as much as the overall equity markets did
- A little less than half of all assets in IRAs and DC pensions are held in mutual funds
